Those of schooled in the world of texting and mobile emailing with the likes of the Blackberry or LG Rumour or similar continue to type with their thumbs no matter what device they've moved onto. It just seems easier that way considering you need the rest of your fingers to hold your phone with. And while being able to use all of your fingers to type is certainly a lot faster, those on the move need to resort to the thumbs and that's okay…unless you have an iPhone.
Thumb typists everywhere are finding that typing on the go isn't quite as easy as they thought it would be with the iPhone; the reason for this being the new multi-touch screen that has replaced the tactile screens of other text-friendly cell phones. Sure the ‘keys' look big and bright but they actually aren't when you're using your biggest digits and are having to contend with a keyboard that you can't actually feel. Thumb typists are finding that they're hitting more than one key at a time without meaning to which means typos—lots of them. The embarrassment of sending off a work-related email full of typos isn't as much of a concern as the time wasted trying to make corrections or having to type slowly and carefully in order to avoid mistakes.
If you're someone who uses the likes of the iPhone more for pleasure than for business then this probably isn't really a big issue for you, but for the many who rely on them for business on the move, then this is more than just a nuisance. When it comes to a mobile device and your business chances are that you actually need to be able to stay in contact while out and about, you need to be able to multitask and you also need a much higher degree of accuracy for the sake of professionalism and more. So having to deal with a touch screen that requires your full, undivided attention as well as slow and specific keystrokes is probably not working out. This has many people longing for the tactile keyboard again where you could feel every character being typed and know right away if your thumbs had hit too many keys at once or not hit a key hard enough.
Trying to type on your iPhone using fingers other than your thumbs is certainly possible, though not very easy when you're trying to walk or move at the same time. There's always the hold with one hand and type with the other option, but that too will slow you down. Being able to rest the device on a flat surface and focus on it would get you the best speed, but then again, that's not very convenient when you consider that it's supposed to be a "mobile" device. And in that case you'd probably just as well use your laptop or computer. This is a tough one—especially after you've dished out the money for the iPhone and don't want to part with it or your big screen that comes in so handy when you're using all of the other cool applications.
If you're looking for a solution that will allow you the best of both worlds—the easy tactile keys that are thumb-friendly without having to give up your nifty new iPhone, then our website is worth a visit. We've got the solution for thumb typists everywhere!
