Did you know that Americans are the fattest population on the planet? Yup, it's sad but true. As for the rest of the world we're all fatter than ever with more overweight people in the world than ever before. And though most people carry extra weight in places like the midsection and thighs, our fingers are not exempt to the extra bulk from those extra pounds. So with all of this being a reality, why on Earth are mobile devices and their keyboards being created smaller and smaller??
While the gadgets like the iPhone continue to fly off shelves and be quite the novelty, the majority of their users are reporting issues with accurate typing because of the keypad not being 'fat digit friendly'. This is leaving former Blackberry users wondering if all the other bells and whistles of the iPhone were worth leaving the big and cushy keyboard of the Blackberry behind.
One can't help but wonder why the hype around the touch pad keyboard. But the truth is that it was designed based on what most people were asking for, which was a small device that could be used for emailing, texting and more with out an unsightly and space-sucking keyboard. The masses really did ask for such a device where the keys would be cleverly hidden away without adding any extra bulk. The result was keyboard software that you pull up when you want it without it taking up any space on the device at all so that you could enjoy more screen and less of everything else. Well – ta-da! –that's just what the iPhone has given us.
The multi-touch keyboard is not a bad idea by any stretch and it really is quite amazing in many ways. The fact that the iPhone offers you a screen that generous without increasing the size of the phone itself is pretty great and, doesn't everything look better in big, blazing color anyway? But as amazing as it may be for all of the other applications, it's still not really working out when it comes to the average, fat-fingered population even though they got just what they'd been asking for. Yes, the keyboard is flat and non-intrusive. And yes, the keys appear bigger than the tactile keys on other devices. But when it comes to actually using said keys you end up with more than one key being pressed at a time which results in more mistakes and of course, more time wasted trying to correct what your big fingers have done. It's not that you never accidentally press more than one key at a time on a tactile keyboards, but at least you can 'feel' your mistake as you're just about to make it or at the very least before you make the next mistake. With the touch screen you don't feel it or hear it and if you just keeping typing away obliviously—as so many of us do—you'll have several mistakes to go back to and correct by the time you're done.
