The great thing about Apple is that they will keep trying to improve their products even after they've sold billions. Sure, they could take their money and say ‘screw it' to those who complain about certain features and designs but instead work to make their stuff better and better. For instance, after people got their hands on the much coveted iPhone they took the complaints into account when creating the new iPhone 3GS. The complaints I am referring to; the lack of a QWERTY keyboard, the need for more memory, a need for bigger keys for easier typing, a need for improved accuracy when typing.
The iPhone 3GS is just as you would expect from Apple; it's sleek and modern, packed full of neat applications and features and has a bigger QWERTY keyboard as well as some new features to help speed up your typing and lessen the chance of typos. The bigger keyboard is of course still a virtual keyboard or ‘multi-touch keyboard' as they call it. This means no actual tactile keyboard to feel but rather the smooth, flat touch screen that sets them apart from other mobile messaging devices. Features like predicative typing let the iPhone 3GS finish words for you or offer suggestions when you appear to have made a typo. You can tap, click and pinch your way along the landscape keyboard to help with your typing. The thing is, these features that are supposed to make things easier are continuing to slow people down. As it turns out, more bells and whistles are what people want, just not when it comes to typing and emailing on the move.
Business users are not finding the 3GS any more efficient than the previous iPhone when it comes to communicating via email or even text. Being able to type on the move is still a problem when you can't feel the keys on a touch screen like you can on a tactile keyboard. When you're busy trying to multitask being able to use your sense of touch while typing is what helps you with your speed and even accuracy-more so than an attractive flat touch screen that tries to predict what you're really trying to say when you're typing away quickly and don't have time to focus all of your attention on the screen. And as more and more users are finding out; even the new iPhone 3GS doesn't compare to having a tactile screen to type away on with your thumbs or index finger or any other fingers that you can use while your eyes are busy elsewhere.
These new features are great for those who use the iPhone for pleasure and gaming and chatting away with friends, but when you're talking business and the pressure is on and time is limited, even the new version is falling short. And all because of the lack of a tactile keyboard.
