missing the tactile screen the woes of having to look when you type

Adding a QWERTY keyboard to a mobile phone was pretty much the best thing since sliced bread. Even though many of us became complete whizzes at texting away on our phone keys, the majority of people in this day and age know their way around the good ol' QWERTY keyboard like nobody's business! We type all day at the office or at school and we spend our free time typing away online on Facebook, in chat rooms, via email and God knows where else. So adding the keyboard that we're all so familiar with to a cell phone device was genius. Purely genius.

As with all other great things in life it isn't long before we start looking for ways to make it better. We are a society of people who just want more, more and more. So along came the iPhone and other touch screen devices. As enamored as we all were with the tactile QWERTY keys on our cell phones and Blackberries, we decided that they took up too much space that could and should instead be occupied by a bigger screen and a billion other nifty applications and features. While the iPhone also has a QWERTY touch screen keyboard, us computer-using, tactile screen-accustomed people are having a little bit of trouble typing with the greatest of ease. As a matter of fact, even the most skilled typists find it impossible to use the touch keyboard without having to look while they type—something they haven't done since freshmen year keyboarding class!

For those who can't type without looking anyway, this is hardly a set back, but for those who are accustomed to typing quickly and on the go, this is simply not good. Blackberries, iPhones and the like work much like mini offices for a lot of us these days. We rely on them to keep us in touch with work when we aren't physically able to be there because we're stuck in traffic, having a work lunch or meeting away from the office. They were created to make things even more quick and convenient for us, yet the nifty new touch screens are proving anything but.

Having to rely on trust in your device and your typing skills alone just isn't enough when you need to send an important email or text. Sure, you've got a nice big screen when you want to check your agenda or look up a phone number, but that isn't going to help you when you can't feel yourself hitting more than one key while you're trying to get that message sent or when you don't hit the key hard enough to get the letter out. With a touch screen, you can't feel the keys like you can on the tactile keyboard and this for most of us means having to be especially careful and no longer being able to type out a quick and accurate message without looking at every single keystroke just in case.
